STORYLINE

The Return is a 2018 Japanese drama series based on the same-titled novel by Kanae Minato (Japanese: ; Hepburn: Kaettekita Tokiko). From January 10 to March 14, 2018, it broadcast on Fuji TV.

Tokiko Inoue (Yuko Takeuchi), a lady who has been missing for ten years, is the main character of the drama. She was in a vehicle accident and was supposed to be dead, but luckily she escaped and has been living in hiding ever since. With no recollection of the previous ten years, Tokiko comes home and must try to put together her life and discover who she is.

For Tokiko’s family and friends, her reappearance raises a lot of questions. Hiroki (Masahiro Higashide), her husband, is still in mourning over her passing and is unsure of how to handle her homecoming. Akari (Aoi Morikawa), her daughter, is equally perplexed and furious and has lost her sense of how to interact with her mother.

As Tokiko begins to recall details from her background, she starts to have doubts that the vehicle accident was not actually caused by her. She is determined to find out who did it and why since she thinks she was abducted and held captive for ten years.

The Return is a dramatic thriller that examines themes of identity, memory, and retribution. As Tokiko, Yuko Takeuchi delivers a strong performance, and the rest of the ensemble is likewise top-notch. The drama has a nice conclusion and is expertly filmed.
